‘Claire House Saved Me': Mum Shares Story at Charity’s Strictly Event.

Hospice families take centre stage as Claire House Does Strictly raises £66,000

A mum who says she "wouldn't be here today" without Claire House Children's Hospice shared her emotional story as the charity's Strictly event raised £66,000.

Wendy Moore, whose daughter Erin is cared for by Claire House, spoke during Claire House Does Strictly in Liverpool to tell supporters about the difference the hospice has made to her family.

She was joined by her daughter Harper, 10, who performed alongside brothers and sisters of seriously and terminally ill children supported by the hospice.

Wendy said: “Thirteen years ago, I was in labour with Erin after a completely normal pregnancy. During her delivery, the unthinkable happened and she suffered a catastrophic brain injury.

“Suddenly you’re living in a world that you never knew existed. And when that happens, you need people who already understand that world. That is what Claire House became to us.

“If it wasn’t for Claire House, I probably wouldn’t be here. They don’t only help Erin; they also help Harper too.”

A highlight saw Harper and other siblings take centre stage in a group dance medley, receiving a standing ovation from the packed room as some were cheered on by their younger brothers and sisters cared for by the charity.

The glittering event brought together hospice families, supporters and sponsors for an evening of entertainment, with eight contestants paired with professional dancers from Headliners.

More than 300 guests, including Claire House founder Chris Cain, enjoyed a red-carpet arrival, interviews with Liverpool content creator Niall O'Callaghan, a photobooth, drinks reception and dinner before a night of dancing and fundraising at Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel.

Waterloo Road actress Chelsee Healey joined Yvonne Dunn, Miguel Doforo and last year's winner Josh Maddison on the judging panel, scoring performances ranging from tango routines to Broadway-inspired numbers.

Defending champion Zara Dunn returned to the dancefloor and won with Alex Knowles, 24, from Warrington following a high-energy samba to The Macarena.

Winner Alex said: “What an amazing experience! I decided to do Strictly after watching my mate Josh win it with Zara last year. Claire House is an amazing charity, I couldn’t think of a better cause. I’m so grateful to Zara for working miracles, I’ve gone from being stiff as a pole to Strictly champion!”

Claire House mum Nichola Sankey's Mary Poppins-inspired performance to Chim Chim Cher-ee earned her the runner-up spot.

She said: “As a parent of a child supported by Claire House, I know first-hand the incredible care, comfort and precious time they provide not only for children, but for the whole family.

“Every dancer was incredible and there was such an amazing atmosphere. A huge thank you to everyone who donated and supported this very important event. Every donation really does make a difference to families like ours.”
