Inspired to Care

For Claire House lead nurse Erin McCulloch, looking after seriously ill children isn’t just a job – it’s something she’s meant to do.

Erin, 29, joined Claire House Children’s Hospice as a clinical nurse four years ago and stepped into her current role in September 2023. But long before she put on a uniform, there was one girl who inspired her work.

Evie Skerrett was a family friend — bright, brave and the first Girlguiding Rainbow Erin ever led as a Rainbow leader. Sadly, Evie was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour and died aged 14.

“Walking into my interview, I remember thinking Evie sent me to care for other children,” Erin says. “I promised myself I’d keep her memory alive, and I do that every day – through my work, by sharing her story and through the fundraising I’ve done in her name, like my skydive, abseil and various running events.”

At first, Erin from Birkenhead wasn’t sure a children’s hospice was for her. But that changed when she joined the team.

“When I tell people where I work, they assume it’s going to be full of sadness. But it’s such an amazing place. I love how rewarding it is.

“A lot of our children can’t verbally communicate so when they smile or relax in the hydrotherapy pool or a music session, it’s so special.”

The clinical work is complex – tracheostomies, gastrostomies, vents – but what matters most is the time, care and compassion nurses like Erin give.

“End‑of‑life care can be emotionally tough, but it’s a privilege to be there for a child and support families at the worst time of their lives. Some memories stay with you forever, and they show just how special Claire House really is.”
