‘It reminds me of just how much everybody loved him’
Well done to mum Pandy and her family and friends who ran a half marathon in memory of her teenage son Adam.
Adam Nicholas, from Wavertree, received specialist care and support from Claire House before he died aged 18.
Pandy said the hospice helped both him and the entire family during the most difficult time of their lives.
LFC fan Adam had been under hospital care for the majority of his younger years due to an immune deficiency.
Adam’s health declined as a teenager. He was lovingly cared for at Claire House at the end of his life and died on December 12, 2024.
More than a year on, Pandy said she is still blown away by the care and attention her son received at the hospice.
To say thank you, she took on the Liverpool Half Marathon on Mother's Day, joined by friends and family, to raise money for Claire House.
Together, they raised an incredible £6,100 to help fund vital end-of-life care and Butterfly bereavement support for families like hers.
Pandy said: "When your child passes away, the level of care and dedication the nurses at Claire House give is amazing.
"Adam's bedroom at Claire House was decorated with everything he loved, including Liverpool Football Club and a jungle theme inspired by Ant and Dec's I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!
“They really went out of their way to make everything feel homely. They supported us through everything - from helping with the death certificate to offering food, drinks and someone to talk to, day or night, as you’re there 24/7.
“They create this protective bubble around you, gently shielding you from the harshness ahead. The care they give is just incredible.”
Speaking after race day, Pandy said she was overwhelmed by the support of friends and family who ran or walked alongside her in Liverpool.
"It makes me so proud!" she says. "It just reminds me of just how much everybody loved him. Everybody who met him fell in love with him. They adored him. He was such a character!
"Adam loved being the centre of attention. So he'd have been amazed to see his face on all our Claire House T-shirts," she laughs.
"Mother's Day is always a hard day for me, so doing this for Adam took the sting out of it. And Adam would've loved it - he'd have been happily clapping his hands and really excited to see us all there for him."
Thank you to Adam's family, and to all our runners and supporters. Every penny raised helps us continue to be there for seriously and terminally ill babies, children and young adults, and their families.
Support in Adam's memory here.
